Cell Phones

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mr. White @ 5:53 am

Student Government members held a “use your cell phone” day today and I am not sure how many actually used their phones.  Members of my advisory group tried to phone Mr. Billaney but he did not answer. I do wonder what thoughts students have about cell phones in the school, at work, etc.  When I think of them in the school, I think that they are just a distraction.  I have not seen where they could be used on a consistent basis.  It seems such a habit as young and old are always checking for messages.  I was at a Volleyball tournament and talking to another coach in the staff room.  He must have checked his phone about 15 times in our short conversation.  He would check it, put it in his pocket, then check it again.  My conversation must have been boring. Ha Ha!

I hear about the restrictions employers put on their workers, even in Boissevain.  These are what I have heard but I am not sure how accurate they are:  Some workers could be suspended from work for 3 days if caught using their cell phone on the job – One business for sure does not allow their workers to use cell phones while they are working – and of course drivers are not allowed to use cell phones.

So – I guess – problems that exist with cell phone use are popping up in other places, not just schools.  What are your thoughts?  Are there educational purposes being used in the school environment.  I tried out a survey that uses cell phones to collect data – it is “polleverywhere” – similar to voting for an IDOL show.

  1. I think it is a good idea that cell phones are not supposed to be used in school. I also think it is a good idea that cell phones are not allowed at work. In my opinion, cell phones are not necessary. Many people have come to rely on them and constantly checking them is just a habit. All the people before our time made it through a day just fine without a cell phone and I think we should be able to as well. In school, teenagers I don’t think have that many pressing issues that they need to have constant contact with someone all the time. Sure they are handy, but they are handy in situations like if you need a ride or got stuck in the snow. They are not necessary for school.

  2. I think that having no cell phones in school is a really good thing to do. If they were allowed in school so many students would be focused on texting there friends and not doing their work and actually learning. I think that having a cell phone afternoon in advisory once in a while is a good treat to have but they are definitely not necessary to have everyday in school. Cell phones are great if you need to get a hold of someone but during school you shouldn’t need to. You should be focused on school not on talking to friends.

  3. I think that cell phone should be allowed in school. I agree they may be a little distraction sometimes but as long as students are getting their work done, it should be ok. I think that it could also help people when it comes to handing in projects and assignments on time because during classes we could write in our calendars in our phone to remind us when projects and assignments are due. This could decrease the amount of students that hand in assignments late because they didn’t remember it was due that day. They can be a distraction but they can also be helpful.

  4. I do not think that it is a very good thing that cell phones arent allowed in school. Teachers always tell you to leave your phone at home or in your locker. But what if there is an emergency such as a fire or lockdown and someone needs to locate you they could just call or text you. I think that cell phones should be allowed in school for that reason. I agree that it is a good thing not to have cel phones during class but in the halls and other places in the school I don’t understand why you couldn’t use them.

  7. There are many different opions on the use of cell phones and I think it all depends on if you use them frequently or not. Obviously, the people who don’t use their cell phones regularly are going to say that they are not needed because they have no use for them anyways. The people who do use them often think differently. However, I do agree that cell phones should not be allowed during class time because it is just an unnessecary distraction. I do think that students should be allowed to use their cell phones on their own time like a breaks and lunch hour I don’y understand why they can’t.

  8. I agree that they shouldn’t be used in class but I really think they should be able to use their phones at break and lunch. ITs good that people dont use them in class because people wouldnt be able to concentrate on their school work. But i think its reasonable that people can use them outside of class. Your not doing any work so its not distracting your from anything.

  9. I agree that cellphones should not be used during classes but should be allowed in the school during breaks and lunches. As stated, a lot of people rely on cellphones and I am often receiving important messages from family members during school.
Without these messages, there would be several occasions where my sister would be left at home alone while I am at hockey or volleyball practice. There are other ways to get such messages to students, but cellphones are the easiest way to do so. Cellphones are also a good way to help your memory as you can add reminder alerts to your calendar. This is a useful way to remind yourself about homework assignments and other important updates.
